Stage 17: Gap – Pinerolo, 179 kilometres
The Tour celebrates the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy with a voyage across the border into Pinerolo on stage 17 where the final climb of the category two Cote de Pramartino could do real damage to anyone who underestimates it.
The race will set out from Gap heading north to Briancon over the third category Cote-de-Saint-Marguerite (71.5kms) and La Chaussee (85.5kms). Both climbs are relatively short but will still play a part in slimming down the peloton before the Col de Montgenevre (96.5kms).
The second category climb is 7.9 kilometres long and the average gradient of 6.1% will dispatch more riders from the group of favourites before the race crosses the border into Italy.
A long 46 kilometre descent will take the race to the first category climb of Sestrieres. At 11 kilometres and with an average gradient of 6.3% the climb is more than tempting for attackers but those with a punch in their legs will hold fire until Cote de Pramartino.
The final climb measures 6.7 kilometres with an average gradient of 6%. It is long enough to pull out a gap over the top before driving on over the eight kilometre descent to the finish in Pinerolo. Anyone not on the guard on the climb could pay dearly at the finish.
