Roche and Deignan on form in Switzerland

Posted 12 June 2010

Nicolas Roche and Philip Deignan got their Tour de Suisse off to a flying start today with both riders finishing within 40 seconds of Fabian Cancellara who won the 7.6 kilometre prologue with a time of 10:21.

Roche (AG2R La Mondiale) conceded just 21 seconds to the Swiss finishing 21st with a time of 10:42 while Deignan (Cervelo Test Team) clocked a time of 11:01 to place 75th just 40 seconds off the blistering pace set by Cancellara (Saxo Bank).

The stage result was a repeat of last year’s prologue with Cancellara once again defeating Roman Kreuziger (Liquigas-Doimo) having toppled his time of 10:22 by a mere second.

The stage provided a solid indication of who is on form for the race after Gustav Larsson (Saxo Bank) set the first real benchmark with a time of 10.32 over the humpbacked circuit in Lugano.

Belgian Devenins (Quick Step) shaved a second off it before Slovakian revelation Peter Sagan (Liquigas-Doimo) came home seven seconds faster at 10.24 after bids by GC contenders David Zabriskie (Garmin Transitions) and Levi Leipheimer (Radioshack) fell short.

Tony Martin (HTC), who finished second overall last year, managed to beat Sagan’s time by .560 of a second before Kreuziger, who completed last year’s top three overall, signaled his GC intentions with a time of 10.22.

All eyes turned to Cancellara with the World Time Trial champion showing his true colours at the finish to pip Kreuziger by the narrowest of margins.
