McNally third at Zellik-Galmaarden

The An Post Sean Kelly team continued to add to its impressive list of early season results at Sunday’s Zellik-Galmaarden where Mark McNally took third place and Gediminas Bagdonas finished fifth.

Irish riders Connor McConvey and Ronan McLaughlin worked well during the early stages of the hilly race before finishing in a group just over two minutes back.

Both McNally and Bagdonas made it into the race winning move of eight riders but were out-foxed by Kevin Thome (Wallonie-Bruxelles) who took the biggest win of his career with Wesley Kreder (Rabobank Continental Team) placing second.

The 173.9km race took the riders over a wicked route which covered many of the cobbled 'bergs' of Flanders.

Many fans lamented the fact that the Bosberg and the Muur van Geraardsbergen had been omitted from the route of the Tour of Flanders this year. But the route of the Zellik-Galmaarden more than made up for this as the riders climbed the Muur twice and the Bosberg no less than times.

With a seventh place at the Beverbeek Classic earlier this year and now this podium place over an extremely taxing route, the 22 year old McNally is showing he may have what it takes to be a real force in the major Belgian classics over the coming years.
