Martin continues GC rise ahead of crunch Tour of the Med finish

Posted 11 February 2012

Dan Martin continued to edge his way up the GC at the Tour of the Mediterranean today after placing 34th on stage three which saw his Garmin-Barracuda teammate Michel Kreder record back-to-back stage wins.
Martin has moved up to 47th in the GC but lost ten seconds overall as Kreder moved into the race lead ahead of tommorow’s queen stage which will bring the race to a close on Mont Faron.
Bad weather delayed the start of the stage for almost an hour and forced the organisers to knock 30 kilometres off the course which was reduced to ten laps of a 10 kilometre race circuit.
Long range breakaway riders Julien El Fares (Team Type 1 Sanofi) and Florian Vachon (Bretagne-Schuller) were pulled back on the final lap after some strong riding by the Garmin-Barracuda and FDJ-Big Mat teams set the stage for the sprinters.
Kreder had the legs to take the stage ahead of Danilo Napolitano (Aqua & Sapone) and Guillaume Blot (Bretagne Schuller) with time bonuses giving him a 10 second lead over Yauheni Hutarovich (FDJ-Big Mat).
Martin’s Garmin-Barracuda team have a strong hand to play in tomorrow’s 130 kilometre long final stage from La Ciotat to Toulon Mount Faron which could well be affected by persistent bad weather.
A shorter, flat stage will create challenges for defending the race lead but the full stage could also enable them to secure overall victory should the right opportunity to spring Martin for a stage win present itself.
