Roche and Deignan kick off Giro del Trentino

Posted 17 April 2012

By Cillian Kelly,

Nicolas Roche and Philip Deignan got their Giro del Trentino underway today with the opening stage consisting of a 14.3 kilometre long team time trial.

Deignan fare the better of the two as his UnitedHealthcare team posted a time of 16’38” for the course to place 12th while Roche’s AG2R La Mondiale team were five seconds slower in 15th place.

The stage was won by the BMC Racing team who clocked a time of 15’50” which was enough to put American Taylor Phinney into the race lead.

The AG2R-La Mondiale team selection for this race is very much geared towards the mountaineous stages to come where they will be led by Roche and John Gadret.

Consequently, for a team which rarely excels against the clock anyway, a top display in today's team time trial was always going to be unlikely. Gadret is building form for the Giro and Roche is working towards the Tour de France via the Tour of California and both riders will be looking to attack in the coming days.

However, there is also a team time trial on the route of the upcoming Giro d'Italia and the test today will have been good practice for the AG2R-La Mondiale outfit who are aiming to build upon Gadret's excellent podium position in last year's Giro.

The Giro del Trentino is also seen as a vital preparation race for the Giro d'Italia and many favourites for the Italian Grand Tour, such as Ivan Basso (Liquigas), Michele Scarponi (Lampre) and Roman Kreuziger (Astana) were taking part today.

Phinney willdefend his leader's jersey tomorrow over a tough 152km route which culminates in a 10km climb to the finish in Sant’Orsola Terme which has an average gradient of 5.7%.
