Roche 13th in Lugano after explosive finale

Posted 26 February 2012

Nicolas Roche had to settle of 13th place at the GP Citta di Lugano after leading home the chase group behind Eros Capecchi (Liquigas-Cannodale) who clinched the win after a flying attack inside the closing four kilometres.

The finish of the race was action packed as Capecchi attacked over the summit of the final climb to string out the peloton.

Roche (AG2R La Mondiale), who was highly motivated for the race, was well placed to respond before a crash on the descent involving Michele Scarponi (Lampre-ISD) upset the rhythm of the chasers.

Damiano Cunego picked up the pursuit in place of his fallen teammate but was unable to rein in his fellow Italian as Capecchi held out to solo to a hard earned win.

Roche followed seven seconds later and while he will be disappointed not to have secured a podium place he will take comfort from the fact that his early season form is strong.
