Irish Pro Cycling voted Best Sports Site

Posted 18 October 2010

Irish Pro Cycling has been voted Best Sports Site at the prestigious 2010 Realex Irish Web Awards.

The award was presented to editor Ian McClure at a gala ceremony held at Dublin’s Mansion House.

It is the first award that the website has won since its launch in April of this year and it was selected after being judged by a panel of 140 judges.

The award recognised the quality of the news and photographic content of the website, its design and how it compared to other sports websites.

It was one of 26 websites nominated for the award and one of just five websites selected as a finalist.

“We are delighted to win an Irish Web Award for Best Sports Site after just six months in operation. It is a huge honour,” Ian said afterwards.

“I created the site because I was continually frustrated by the lack of news coverage afforded to the achievements of Ireland’s new generation of pro cyclists. These guys are very much the forgotten heroes of Irish sport.

“We set out to change that and our site is now read by over 150,000 people a month. Irish cycling is on the cusp of another golden age with huge interest in our pro riders throughout the world.

“We have received enormous support from riders Nicolas Roche, Philip Deignan and Dan Martin and an endless number of people within the Irish cycling community whom I would like to thank for their support.

“The success of our site is also owing to photographer Graham Watson who never fails to capture the beauty of the sport or to portray its depths of human endurance, and to Stephen Roche for his expert and insightful race analysis.

“On a personal note I would like to thank my wife Deirdre for her support, encouragement and many valuable contributions to the website. I would also like the compliment Jonathan Larkin and the team at First Impression for an outstanding job on the design.

“Winning this award is a victory for the small guy in Irish sports journalism and I’m sincerely grateful to everyone who nominated our website and to those who took the time to judge and vote for it over the past two months.

Irish Pro Cycling follows in the footsteps of RTE Sport as the most recent winner of the award.
