Downey achieves top 25 at Worlds U23 TT

Irish under 23 time trial champion Sean Downey was the best placed Irish rider in the U23 time trial at the UCI World Road Race Championships in Copenhagen where he finished 25th.

The race was won by Australia’s Luke Burbridge who was the only rider to break 43 minutes for the 35.2 kilometre long course where he stopped the clock with a time of  42’47”.

Downey was 2’52” off that time while the country’s other representative in the event, Felix English, finished 52nd after completing the course 4’36” behind the winner.

The silver medal went to Rasmus Christian Quaade (Denmark) who was 36 seconds slower that Burbridge while Michael Hepburn picked up the bronze medal for Australia having conceded 46 seconds.

English will now join An Post Sean Kelly riders Sam Bennett and Philip Lavery for Friday’s under 23 road race.

Ryan Mullen produced a strong performance in Wednesday’s junior time trial finishing 16th among the 54 competitors.

The young Irishman posted a time of 36’38” on the windy course which was 1’31” off  Dane Mads Wurtz Schmidt who had a winning time of 35:07.68.

The silver medal was won by James Oram (New Zealand) who was four seconds slower while David Edward (Australia) took the bronze after losing 20 seconds.

Irish national time trial champion Matt Brammeier will join David McCann in the elite men’s time trial today  (Wednesday).

Brammeier will start the two laps of the 23.2 kilometre course shortly at 12.31 p.m. and will be followed by McCann at 1.36 p.m.
