Deignan to miss Tour de France

Posted 21 June 2010

Philip Deignan has not been selected to ride the Tour de France after recurring illness prevented the Cervelo Test Team from naming him as one of its nine riders for the race.

The news will come as a disappointment to the Donegal man who had been named on the team’s preliminary list to ride the race which starts in Rotterdam in twelve days time.

Deignan was forced to quit last week’s Tour de Suisse and will now undergo a period of rest and recuperation before looking at a revised race programme for the remainder of the season.

The 26 year old had shown signs that his form was improving when he figured in a 13 man break on the queen stage of the Swiss race only to suffer with illness the following day.

His season has already been disrupted by a knee injury, over-training and fatigue and by a bout of food poisoning which have forced him to withdraw from a succession of races.

The Cervelo team will be led by 2008 Tour de France winner Carlos Sastre who has been given the all clear to participate in the event alongside last year’s points classification winner Thor Hushovd and stage winner Heinrich Haussler.

The team is completed by Xavier Florencio, Volodimir Gustov, Jeremy Hunt, Andreas Klier, Ignatas Konovalovas and Brett Lancaster. Britian’s Daniel Lloyd has been named as a reserve.
