Day of mixed fortunes for Deignan

Posted 09 April 2010

Cervelo Test Team rider Philip Deignan enjoyed a day of mixed fortunes at the Circuit de la Sarthe today rising and falling through the GC as the race took on two stages.

The Letterkenny man showed continued return to good form in the short 97 kilometres morning stage from Varades to Angers where he finished 12th in a bunch sprint.

While his performance did not see him gain any time on race leader Luis Leon Sanchez (Caisse d’Epargne) he succeeded in maintaining a 10 second deficit and in moving up seventeen places to 23rd overall.

The stage was won by AG2R La Mondiale’s Anthony Ravard after the bunch caught an early three man break away of Pierre Rolland (Bbox Bougues Telecom), Alexandre Geniez (Skil Shimano) and Sebastien Minard (Confidis) just 3 kilometres from the finish.

A short 6.18 kilometre afternoon Time Trial in Angers shuffled the GC with Tiago Machado (Team Radioshack) posting an impressive time of 8 minutes and 26 seconds to take the stage by a mere 2 seconds from Sanchez.

Machado’s win also capped off a day of mixed fortunes for Team Radioshack as he moved up to 2nd in GC just 8 seconds behind Sanchez while a number of his teammates, including Lance Armstrong, were forced to withdraw from the race with a stomach virus.

Deignan was 32 seconds off the winning time and finished 51st on the TT stage with the deficit causing him to drift to 51st in GC where he lies 40 seconds behind Sanchez going into tomorrow’s  181.1 kilometre stage to Pre-En-Pail.
